How it is calculated

Adding GST: GST = amount × rate ÷ 100. Removing GST: GST = total − (total × 100 ÷ (100 + rate))

For an intra-state supply the GST splits equally into CGST and SGST. For inter-state supply the whole amount is IGST.

Worked example

₹10,000 plus 18% GST is ₹1,800 of tax and an invoice of ₹11,800, made of ₹900 CGST and ₹900 SGST. Working backwards from ₹11,800 returns the same ₹1,800.

Questions people ask

The price already contains the tax. To find the taxable value, divide the total by 1 plus the rate — for 18% that is dividing by 1.18.
