How it is calculated
Divide both sides by their greatest common divisor. Share of A = total × a ÷ (a + b)
A ratio has no units of its own, so 16:9 describes the same shape whether you are talking pixels or centimetres.
Worked example
16:9 is already in lowest terms and equals 1.778. Splitting 5,000 in that ratio gives 3,200 and 1,800.
Questions people ask
A ratio compares two parts to each other (16:9). A fraction compares one part to the whole (16/25 of the total).
Multiply both sides by the same number. 16:9 becomes 32:18 or 1920:1080 — all the same proportion.
