How it is calculated
a/b + c/d = (ad + cb) ÷ bd; a/b × c/d = ac ÷ bd; a/b ÷ c/d = ad ÷ bc
The result is divided by the greatest common divisor of numerator and denominator to reach lowest terms.
Worked example
3/4 + 5/6 = (18 + 20)/24 = 38/24, which simplifies to 19/12. That is 1 7/12, or 1.5833 as a decimal.
