How it is calculated

Units (kWh) = watts × hours × days ÷ 1,000; Cost = units × tariff + fixed charges

One unit on your bill is one kilowatt-hour: a 1,000 watt appliance running for one hour.

Worked example

A 1,500 W air conditioner used 6 hours a day for 30 days uses 270 units. At ₹8 a unit that is ₹2,160 a month.

Questions people ask

On the appliance label, the rating plate or the manual. For inverter air conditioners and refrigerators the label figure is a maximum, so real use is often lower.
