How it is calculated
Volume → weight: millilitres × density (g/ml). Weight → volume: grams ÷ density.
A cup of flour and a cup of honey weigh very differently, which is why the ingredient matters more than the maths here.
Worked example
1 US cup is 236.6 ml. Flour has a density near 0.53 g/ml, so a cup of flour is about 125 g — while a cup of honey is about 340 g.
Questions people ask
Because scooping is inconsistent. Sifted flour weighs less than packed flour from the same cup. Weighing is always more repeatable than measuring by volume.
Yes. A US stick of butter is 113 g, or half a cup, and the converter handles it through butter's density.
