How it is calculated

Stride length ≈ height × 0.414; Distance = steps × stride length; Calories ≈ steps × 0.04 × (weight ÷ 70)

Stride length and the calorie factor are population averages for walking — actual values shift with pace, leg length and terrain.

Worked example

10,000 steps at 170 cm height and 70 kg weight covers about 7.04 km and burns roughly 400 kcal.

Questions people ask

Running strides are longer and burn more per step, so this walking-based estimate will undercount both distance and calories for a run.
