How it is calculated
Devine — men: 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft; women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft
Robinson, Miller and Hamwi use the same shape with different constants, which is why the four results differ by a few kilograms.
Worked example
At 170 cm a man is 6.93 inches over 5 ft, so Devine gives 50 + (2.3 × 6.93) = 65.9 kg. The four formulas land between 65.2 and 66.7 kg, and the healthy BMI range for that height is 53.5–72.0 kg.
Questions people ask
None precisely. They were built for medication dosing, not body goals. Treat the healthy BMI range as the more useful target band.
They were derived from different populations in different decades. The spread between them is a reminder that "ideal weight" is a range, not a single number.
